Biology:

The Ebola virus is part of a group of negative-stranded RNA viruses. These viruses are known as Filoviridae. The Ebola virus are unique among viruses in that it has a stringy narrow shape, while other viruses are bumpy and round. In some ways they are different from any virus. This is why many scientist believe they should be grouped in their own category.  Most of the strains are not airborne.

When viewed under a electron microscope the Filoviridae appear as long forms and occasionally branching out forms. They also have forms that appear like a "U" or a "b" form.  The virus takes about 8 hours to replicate.

The Ebola virus consists of 4 strains,

• Ebola Sudan
• Ebola Zaire
• Ebola Reston
• Ebola Tai [Ivory Coast]

Classification: Level 4 Pathogen. (higher than AIDS, which is level 2)
Incubation period: 2-21days. Depending upon strain.
Mortality rate: 70-90%
